Machine learning for fraud detection

Ph.d Ba Pham-Toronto University, Canada

On this forum of the Vietnamese Students Union, there have been discussions about suspected cases of fraud in university entrance exams.

For example, Nguyễn Anh Tuấn wrote about the political consequences of cheating in Hà Giang, Quách Tuấn Ngọc wrote about a deputy examiner directly edited the test of candidates in Hà Giang, and perhaps taking the issue into context, Nguyễn Lê Anh asked the rhetorical question as to whether he can write a series of mathematical textbooks that could tutor students from kindergarten to college (1-3).

Artificial Intelligence is the broad concept of machines being able to carry out tasks in a way that we would consider “smart”. Machine Learning is a current application of artificial intelligence based around the idea that we should really just be able to give machines access to data and let them learn for themselves.(4) Engineers now realize that rather than teaching computers how to do intelligent tasks, it would be far more efficient to code them to think like human beings, and then give them instructions to do work intelligently.

Detecting suspected cases of fraud has been painful for banking and commerce industry. Data scientists have been successful in solving this problem with machine learning. Automated fraud screening systems powered by machine learning can help businesses in reducing fraud. Of course, we can use machine learning to ensure the integrity and quality of high school graduation exams and university entrance exams.

Although there are no firm statistics on Vietnamese researchers or graduate students working in machine learning on campuses in North America and Europe, there are probably hundreds to thousands of them. Thousands of students back home are very well doing machine learning. To name a place, there are currently quite a few Vietnamese graduate students working on artificial intelligence and machine learning in this laboratory in Toronto.(5)

Why doesn’t the government in Vietnam use machine learning to ensure the integrity of high school graduation exams and university entrance exams?
